Pollution, space and name dropping

Tuesday, 05 August 2008 10:46

I thought a quick whip around of topics might be good for this edition of the blog.

Pollution - Yes you know where I'm going with this and I will only go there one more time. The games have yet to start and already I can't hear any more about pollution. Yes we know there is an issue. Yes everyone has to deal with it. Yes it is not good for athletes. But NO, it is not a surprise or a new phenomenon and if athletes felt that strongly they had alternatives such as an altered our program, staying home, or hardening up. Harsh I know as I'm not in Beijing but seriously we all knew this was going to happen even as armchair sports watchers. Surely the time to complain is done. And you know what? All the hype is being created by the media! I have yet to hear an athlete really go to town on this topic...yet. But invariably we will. Pollution might well be the excuse of these Games. Ok I'm putting my cue in the rack on this issue.

Space and name dropping - Now we are lucky to get some great interviews on firstoffthebike.com but our latest is with the man himself Chris McCormack. During our conversation he mentioned that triathletes can be very self absorbed and driven, (he meant this in the context of our discussion and wasn't deriding anyone), if you fall into this category of the too serious mode maybe some space would help realign the old perspective. I mean, we all get a little obsessive at times but sometimes just finding that space away from this all consuming sport is a good thing. Macca had just returned from a two hike in the mountains to see the country side and clear his mind before the 'heavy stuff' wound up. I nice lesson from the best in the business.

By the way the interview is a cracker and we will be getting some of it up this week!

"SPACE" for most us after a race means going back to work.
Will definetley be interesting to see how the pollution issue affects results.
