Monday Hit List with an extended Wrongtown
Sunday, 17 August 2008 09:00
This week's Monday Hit List features one of the biggest bike riders in the world.- Chris Hoy - If you haven't seen this guy, grab an eyeful of easily the biggest cyclist to ever get onto the Hit List. He is purpose built for the world of track cycling. This man from the crack U.K track team has been amazing. His ride for gold in the Kieran made all the rest look like club cyclists. Track smackdown at its' finest!
- Fabulous Cancellara - Excuse this bit of cheese but Cancellara has been one mighty fast bike rider in Beijing. His impersonation of a motor bike in the road race was awesome and the fact that he backed this up in the time trial was even better. One thing you have to love about Cancellara is the fact that he is never disappointing. He does not seem to have off days. Cancellara is also able to handle pressure too. As the reigning world time trial champion he never let that be too big a burden on him. He just went out and did the job... again.
- Rebekah Keat - The Ironman Australia '07 winner took out the half Ironman at Yepoon in a very dominant display. And while she won in a field that wasn't too deep Keat still wins and wins well. She is a good professional and makes every race important. There are no time outs for Keat who must just be punching the air to be back and racing and continuing the form that will see her press hard in the bigger races to come this season.
- Chrissie Wellington - This girl is proving impossible to beat. A victory at the recent Timberman just adds to a resume that is running out of room in the 'W' column. Is it too early to talk back to back in Kona? Check out our interview with Britain's newest sporting sensation.
- Anna Meares - A fall earlier this season in L.A nearly crippled her. Not surprisingly she has made a remarkable recovery. We say not surprisingly because Anna Meares is a really tough competitor and a hard worker. It is not surprising either that she has blasted her way into the quarter finals in the women's sprint on the track. She is a super fast bike rider and has put the rest of the world on notice.
Wrongtown of the week - Where do we go this week? Australian athletes crying through interviews promising the country they did their best and then ducking out on the waiting media (you know who we are talking about). The media is a double edged sword for athletes. They use to gain sponsorship and publicity but when it goes South they don't want to know about it. Plenty of Olympic athletes handled themselves in a much more controlled and dignified manner. The Australian men's track cycling team. These guys were all dominant in Athens but have not thrown a punch in Beijing. Bruce McAvaney - Those in Australia listening to Bruce's lackluster call of the swimming would have been surprised to see a shift in pulse. He was suddenly excited with the switch to track and field. Bruce you need to lift! Michael Phelps could've won 12 gold medals and we would've got all the excitement of a paint drying contest. Olympic montages - watching 4 minutes of slow motion where the only images were hands and feet might have been taking this a bit far!
Thanks for the indulgence!
