Ironman WA to stay
Ironman WA is staying in Busselton Western Australia for the next five years. With current organiser IMG having had their license taken back to the WTC fold there was some speculation as to what would happen to this event. According to WA Business news the WA State Government has secured the event and it will remain in Busselton for five years.
One of the main reasons is that it is a drawcard for international competitors. This season over 450 of the field came from overseas. This is a major coup for Events Corp WA and the town of Busselton. Last year an economic study of Ironman WA saw over 2200 people arrive for the event pumping in some $6million into the economy. Over 20 accredited media outlets covered the race and that generated over 40 hours of TV coverage.
Tourism Minister Liz Constable said the deal would deliver a total economic impact of more than $33million over the five years.
"Ironman WA Triathlon has been a huge success in the past five years," Dr Constable said.
This is a significant signing given the fact that the Port Macquarie Ironman is waning. The popularity of Western Australia has put it ahead of its' cross state rival. Many athletes saying they would rather race in WA than New South Wales.
