The Tour de France "insignificant"
On his regular radio spot during the Tour de France with SEN's Daniel Harford firstoffthebike.com's editor Phil Wrochna was asked to comment on journalist Patrick Smith's ill informed statements about the Tour de France.
Smith stated that the Tour de France was the most insignificant sporting event in the year. Wrochna was asked for his comment and in true firstoffthebike.com fashion he did not take a backwards step. The result was an entertaining few minutes in defence of one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

by Steve, 13 July 2010Pat is a tool. When an f1 car crashes which they regularly do, do people say they cant drive? Of course not, we realises that accidents occur as a result of great pressure and drivers pushing themselves to the limit. Its exactly the same at the tour this first week. Has been unbelievably aggressive and just bloody hard. I cant remember such a full on tour and the fact the Cadal has ended up in yellow at the end of it is a huge achievement in my books. If he manages to just make the podium i will be so proud of him, just hope he stays aggressive.
by Whiteline, 09 July 2010Al has stolen my thunder. Smith has his IQ on the back of his footy jumper.
by Scott Mitchell, 08 July 2010Patrick Who??????????
by Brett, 08 July 2010I am impressed Phil, because in the face of such stupidity it can some times be hard to respond without sinking to their level. And Patrick Smith's is a low level. He is a rubbish journalist and his comments on the Tour are ridiculous. They really aren't worth responding too. I mean France is on a national holiday for all of July for a reason?! Try getting anything done in western Europe in July and you are in real trouble! Well done Phil.......and go Cadel!
by firstoffthebike's Phil Wrochna , 08 July 2010Thanks for the support guys.. hard to be measured when you're that angry
by Ross, 08 July 2010Well done Phil. Looking forward to the TdF show with Dan Hoy an Tim Bradley again this year, you boys comments are great.
by Markus, 08 July 2010Well done Phil mate
by Al, 08 July 2010Patrick - what an absolute moron. Another example of the Australian sporting media and its reporter’s pigeon-holing themselves and the listeners into 3 or 4 "quintessential Australian sports". If we're not all wearing short shorts or cricket whites, then obviously our sport is useless and a joke, well it's clear by his comments he is a joke.
The fitness and skill required by cyclists/triathletes easily accounts for the skills and fitness required to play 4, 30 minutes quarters of footy.
He is probably one of the drivers that abuses riders on the road as well...
I heard Phils comments today and all i can say is well done. Patrick Smith should stick to what he knows........um whats that again?????
Uneducated football bogan is all Patrick Smith is
