Product Review - Brooks Green Silence
When you open the box of your new Green Silence you are greeted by a shoe that will definitely stand out. The bright red and yellow look the goods and this is something that is out of the ordinary for the Brooks range, one not known for the bold statement. The Green Silence will surely make a statement on race day.
The Skinny
The Green Silence is a racing flat let's get that out there first and foremost. The other side of this shoe is that, as the name suggests, it has some impressive eco-friendly credentials. And what does that mean? For starters, it's constructed with roughly half as many parts as other shoes in this category on the market, requiring less energy to make as well as being constructed from an impressive 70% recycled consumer materials, like the heel counter which is made from old CDs. A great initiative by Brooks and one that will hopefully encourage other manufacturers to look at their practices.
The Trial
We took the Green Silence on a few runs over varying terrain to give it a workout and simulate some of the surfaces you may be faced with come race day. Asphalt, trail and grass were all run on during the trial. The folks down there at Brooks have cooked up a shoe that is made for racing.
Once on it feels very light (only 6.9 oz) but your feet still feel supported. Some race flats have the lightweight going on but forget about heel support. That is not to say you can run miles and miles in this shoe but for our purposes it was very comfortable. It has a semi detached tongue that stays in place when you jam your foot in there in the heat of battle.
The upper is also a lightweight mesh that seemed completely breathable. Socks are definitely an option here and if you are one who shuns them at races then the green Silence has you covered. With only 4 lace points on the top of the shoe if you run elastic laces this should work in well and make your transitions easier.
With cool colours and a name that could belong to a super hero Brooks have hit upon a winner with this one. The Green Silence felt very supportive, light and responsive. If you are a Sprint/Olympic racer then this may be the shoe for you.
